World-famous comic character Desperate Dan appeared in The Dandy starting from 1937.

The last revamp did not improve sales, which were stuck around the 8,000 a week mark, and at the end of 2012, on its 75th anniversary, The Dandy was cancelled as a print publication, and relaunched in a new online format, combining limited animation with a traditional panels-and-balloons format.

It was launched on 4 December 1937 — six months ahead of its sister comic, 'The Beano' — priced at 2d for 28 pages. Inside was a free gift — the Express Whistler. Desperate Dan. By the 1950s, 'The Dandy' was Britain's largest-selling comic with a circulation of around two million copies per week.

Dan made his appearance in the first issue of The Dandy – the sister comic to The Beano – in1937. The character was created by Dudley D Watkins, originally as an outlaw or 'desperado' (hence his name), but in time he turned into a goodie.

The highest graded known copy of the first annual in Very Fine Plus was sold at auction in September 2006 for £6,232. And low grade first annuals are popular too. A Poor copy with no spine and detached front board sold for £418 in Sep 2006 by Comic Book Postal Auctions.

Beau Brummell

The figure of the dandy has evolved into diverse expressions over the course of two centuries, but always tracks back to the extremely neat, buttoned-up figure of George Bryan “Beau” Brummell (1778–1840).

The final printed edition was issued on 4 December 2012, the comic's 75th anniversary, after sales slumped to 8,000 a week.

A dandy could be a self-made man both in person and persona, who emulated the aristocratic style of life regardless of his middle-class origin, birth, and background, especially during the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Britain.

Initially Dan was a desperado on the wrong side of the law, hence the name Desperate Dan. Later on, however, he switched sides and become a friendlier character, helping the underdog, although sometimes his great strength caused more harm than good.

In 1997 the strip temporarily vanished from the comic's pages following a story where he struck oil and ran off with the Spice Girls. He eventually returned in issue 2924; dated December 6 1997, this was the sixtieth anniversary issue.

Desperate Dan made his first appearance in issue 1 of the “The Dandy Comic” in December 1937 as reproduced above. “The Dandy Comic” was arguably Scotland's greatest contribution to 20^th century popular culture at least until a single mother completed her book about a boy wizard in an Edinburgh café in 1995.

Created by David Donaldson, writer Steve Bright and legendary artist John Geering, Bananaman turned traditional superhero tropes on their head with his hair-brained hijinks and misadventures. In 1985 he moved across to the Dandy and after a short stint, Bananaman then appeared from 2012 in the Beano comic.

Desperate Dan, hero of DC Thomson's 'The Dandy' comics, is immortalised in Dundee, his place of 'birth'. The grizzly-faced strong man is cast in an 8-ft tall bronze statue in the city centre alongside his 'Dawg'.
