Rami Baitiéh, the retail superstar new boss of Morrisons - ex-Carrefour, has sent a stiff message to staff, comparing businesses to "burning candles" that need change to avoid burning out. Rami, known for his turnaround ability, joined Morrisons from Carrefour and immediately highlighted the company's financial state, which includes a substantial debt from a £7 billion acquisition by CD&R in 2021. Morrisons is struggling with £6.6 billion in debt and £400 million in annual interest payments, not entirely covered by last year's profits.Rami has set-up daily store visits and direct communication with the top 150 executives to address problems. Rami emphasises the importance of customer service and has given more autonomy to buyers and store managers to cater to diverse consumer preferences.Rami is the very definition of a hands-on leader, for example, on the help page on the Morrison’s website https://lnkd.in/evDjFgHe: “Complaint not resolved? … or, if your query relates to a different topic and we haven't been able to resolve it through the options provided above, please let our CEO, Rami, know by emailing” [him on xx@xx].Despite recent sales growth, Morrisons lags behind industry averages and faces intense competition, particularly from Aldi. CD&R is working on improving profitability and considering selling Morrisons' petrol forecourts to Motor Fuel Group to inject capital into the company. However, doubts remain able reviving Morrisons without resorting to unaffordable price cuts. Having said that and having seen the job done at Carrefour, I’d back this charismatic leader. I love this! Walmart is recognizing their hardest-working store managers! The announcement of grants in company stock up to $20,000 annually is a testament to their commitment to retaining talent and fostering future leadership. The role of a Walmart store manager has evolved significantly during these challenging times, and this initiative aligns perfectly with CEO John Furner's vision of them thinking and acting like owners. Investing in their people. In 2022, 80% of Ross’s store and operational leaders started as hourly associates. More than half of their DC supervisors and managers were promoted from within. With my 25 years of retail journey, retail business is aligned to few simple steps ..1) Retail is common sense ...whether our products and stores are aligned to our target customers and are we making that right and correct ourselves to deliver that consistently 2) Retail is people's buisness...is everyone in the organisation aligned to this. people refer to staff , customers, vendors etc. As a leader are we listening to our staff , customers and understanding them by taking feedback.3) in my view we need to develop the sense of ownership at every level ..Here I find most of the time managers say they can't depend or trust ..which i find as a disconnect...Yes mistakes do happen, maybe 1 out of 10 .So in order to correct that 1 person they put the other 9 into trouble by making so many check lists and online updates ...Finally the team also works on the check list and they lose interest...The end result brand comes under pressure and the modern day retail has come to the attitude of live for the day ...unless the team feels that it's their business nothing will change.

The 4 skills crucial to the supply chain leader of the future. The one that I found most striking? Comfort with ambiguity. I find it critical to embracing change instead of protecting the status quo.#supplychain #optimization #leadership

"Retail leaders are gritty AF, and we wear that like a badge of honour. Don't dare tell us it can't be done because we'll figure out a way. We'll pick up packing tape, bend a paperclip, and make it work."Retail isn't just a job; it's a daily masterclass in adaptability, courage, perseverance, and resilience. From managing teams to tackling fires (sometimes literally), we do it all with a smile and a whole lot of grit. So, to my fellow retail warriors: keep grinding, keep hustling, and keep wearing that badge of honour. Because when the going gets tough, we're the ones who get going. 💫

There is often a perception that running closeout and discount stores is easy. The reality is the opposite. It’s very difficult, because you have to really understand what is going to shift and what isn’t. There’s a lot of skill and experience needed in that.It was great to talk about this in the context of regional chain Ocean State Job Lot. The business is doing well and is adding stores, with five new locations planned for this fall across the Northeast.A good understanding of local communities, sharp buyers who know what will sell, and a focus on giving shoppers the treasure-hunt vibe that entertains and entices have all been key to its success. It was great to chat with CT Insider about the chain and its recent growth.
